Antique Society Silk

Embroidered "Hook-spur Violet" Tablecloth

Item Number T36308

*** If you would like to know more about this amazing style of embroidery, I recommend a new book by Donna Cardwell. Find it at:

Direction of stitch and gradations of color are embroidered here in sunset colored silks as if the entire piece were set to music...can you hear it?...a lyrical, layered suite that dances around a delicious, repeating refrain??

Executed in the Kensington stitch, the foundation of the society silk embroidery style, we see, here, Viola adunca, Hook-spur Violet, on natural, unbleached, finely woven Italian linen.  A tiny speck is hardly worth mentioning, shown below.  Freshly hand laundered in LeBlanc Linen Wash and pressed to perfection, in excellent condition.  c.1890 - 1920's.  46" X 47"
