Antique Society Silk

Embroidered "Maidenhair Fern" Tea Cloth

Item Number T36008

The society silk style of embroidery began as a past time in England long before it came to America.  For some women it eventually became a way to earn a living from home.  Perhaps the original American cottage industry, fine silk embroideries could be produced at home and then sold as lots to linen houses for sale in a wider market.  This glorious piece of embroidery came from that period and represents the very best of technique, materials and design. *** If you would like to know more about this amazing style of embroidery, I recommend a new book by Donna Cardwell. Do you look for only the best?

Every embroidered form has a best...a height to which an accomplished embroideress would strive.  Maidenhair fern was a widely chosen subject for it's was 'easy' to stitch.  But here, here we see the best of the best...

Using layering, direction of stitch and very fine gradations of color, this piece exemplifies the vivid realism that was so sought after with this style.  Cream linen is finished with layered scallops and perfectly trimmed.  This is a fabulous piece!  Excellent condition as shown and described, freshly hand laundered in LeBlanc Linen Wash.  c.1890 - 1910.  27"
