Antique Wool Flannel Tablecloth,
Stunning Society Silk Embroidery
Item Number T03003
A designer friend of mine suggested I cut this piece up to make it into pillows...imagine! I simply could not do it but he was right, they would be stunning. I have passed this piece around for the last several months and the consensus is that it is likely true French or English country, and very old. I vote for English because it is there that the "society silk embroidery" began, and this piece is a pristine early example of the style. The embroidery is heavily detailed, padded, and extraordinary in floral composition. The embroidress used silk, wool and cotton flosses to develop depth and contrast for each flower type. The colors are extremely vivid and carefully chosen for their various hues in combination with one another. It is executed at a bugs-eye-view of a random garden scene. Just stunning!
But, it is not without flaws. The embroidery is in perfect condition but the wool has numerous small moth holes and moth near- holes. The largest of these is about the size of a pencil eraser. There are also a few small faded spots. The edges are a tiny bit uneven, as if the maker had not finished the piece. When displayed on a table these things truly fade to the background because of the spectacular work. The embroidered border is 4" - 6" tall all the way around. Cloth is 48" X 50". If you love French country (or society embroidery), this is a must have piece. c.1880's - 1900
