Finest Vintage Appenzell Embroidered Linen Napkins
Item Number N51806
Breathtaking Appenzell-type embroidered linen vintage napkins are exquisitely monogrammed "GW" or "WG" and finished with pulled lace roses in one corner of each. The perimeter is finished with embroidered Buratto work (a form of pulled lace) that is a classic element of the Appenzell embroidery style. The other three hallmarks of the style include the gray marking behind the embroidery, lobed, satin stitched flowers, and satin stitched embroidery. This lovely set includes all four of these distinguishing elements, embroidered on the finest white linen of medium weight.
Rare and exceptional quality white linen is beautifully embroidered by hand in the Appenzell style...A formal, masculine monogram reminds me of a shield or emblem seal that was used as a sign of ownership. It was stitched by hand in the French style in the center above the embroidery. Collectable and rare in this large size. Several have a broken thread or two on the border, the worst is shown below. Freshly laundered and pressed, in excellent condition, as described and shown. c.1920's 23" X 24.5" (varies by 1/2")
