Antique White Linen Embroidered

Napkins -- Cantu Lace

Item Number N48906

Ok.  Say it with me, "Frilly, frilly, FOO FOO beyond belief!"...for the girliest girl among us...

Splendid example of Cantý lace surrounds each antique linen napkin in this fabulous old set.  Tightly woven tendrils terminate in characteristic little flower buds.  This wonderfully feminine lace has it's origins in Brussels, Belgium and was called "Rosaline lace".  The methods and patterns used in these laces reflect earlier 18th century Venetian needle laces and constituted a resurgence in the lace making craft in this area.  Cantý lace is highly sought after not only for it's delicate beauty but also for it's rarity.  After the occupation of Italy at the start of WWI Cantý lace ceased in it's production and was no longer available to the international market.   "The lacemakers of Cantý are the sole depository of the technical secrets for its execution. "**

Hand made lace, cutwork, embroidery and crisp white linen come together in these rare antique linen napkins.   Hand needlelace from Cantu is made of linen and perfectly white on these heavy linen napkins of superior quality.  A splendid cartouche in one corner of each features a lace inset and a wispy play between embroidered and cutwork details. The best of a style and the finest hand lace make this set an exceptional and collectable set...what better reason is there to throw a party??  Several breaks in the lace, examples shown below, are common to this kind of piece...these are in remarkable condition with one speck and one pinhole, shown below, and have been freshly laundered and pressed.  c.1900  22" square including lace
