Vintage Linen Embroidered Tablecloth and Napkins Set
Item Number M13107
The story of this set may very well be in the details...I've puzzled over it for some time. I have wondered if this might be a Marghab pattern...an early one designed by her brother-in-law, Theo. His patterns are listed in Perfection Never Less, the Vera Way Marghab Story by D.J. Cline on page 83 in the text, but many are left off the list in the back of the book.
Now before you rush to disagree, consider the regal nature of the center panel (shaped like a cross), the large notched "castle" pattern in the drawnwork (I know, she rarely used drawnwork...) and on the hem, and the quality/character/placement of the Thistle design. Every element of a Marghab design had meaning that supported the the central theme...even the hems...Thistle is the flower of Scotland...
Perhaps I am reaching, I admit, but the work on this set is extraordinary. Creamy heavier weight linen in richly embroidered with Thistles in several shades that add richness and depth. Napkins each have a Thistle in one corner. All hems are widely notched and finished by hand. Freshly laundered and pressed, in excellent condition. c.1940's -- 50's Tablecloth--51.25" X 68" 6 napkins--15.25" X 15.5"
