Antique Society Silk Embroidered Pillowtop
"Heart and Roses"
Item Number C24306
Erroneously identified elsewhere as an Arts and Crafts convention, these pillowtop pieces are actually done in the society silk style. Using the 19th century English Kensington stitch, each piece demonstrates the best techniques for shading and padding in embroidery designs that reflect realistic and natural elements. Embroidered pillow tops were a favorite of Victorian embroidresses...their colorful patterns and whimsical mottos were cheerful and uplifting additions to everyday decor.
This one is so romantic with two roses in the center of a heart. The piece was once framed and shows a fade line about 4" from the edge. This leaves ample room for incorporating the piece into a pillowtop if desired. The embroidery is richly shaded and beautifully executed. A rust mark or two are in the wider field beyond the embroidery. The piece was apparently starched at some point and would benefit from a brief soak before it is finished or framed. Offered in excellent condition, as described. c.1880's - 1910 20" X 18"
