Antique Italian Figural Filet Lace
Boudoir Sham, "Phoenix"
Item Number C22606
Fabulous antique Italian linen embroidered boudoir sham features an Heraldic central panel of handmade filet lace depicting a double Phoenix crest. Not "Griffons" as I had originally thought, these Phoenix represent long life, birth/rebirth and survival through times of extreme difficulty. Opposite corners depict coronal winged images (matching) and alternate corners each depict different symbols that seem to be varied interpretations of the central crest.
This appears to be a piece that was commissioned to commemorate a marriage or birth...creamy, lighter weight linen is embroidered with Italianate forms and needlelace fillings that surround hand figural filet lace panels and a hand lace finished edge. The back buttons through hand sewn buttonholes....buttons are all in place. Beautiful handwork, cutwork, symbolism and lighter-than-air creamy linen make this a fine collectible piece. Slight wear and a bit of age are shown below do not detract from it's significance or beauty. Freshly laundered and pressed, in good to excellent condition. c.1880 - 1920 18" square
